Following on from a post on Female representation in animation, I feel it is a natural progression to then discuss the often stereotypical or offensive racial representation in animations. General media and Hollywood often gets a lot of stick for their racial representation, either white washing roles, not giving roles to people of colour or adhering to outdated stereotypes.
In the animation industry, Disney has received a lot of criticism for this over time, with examples seen here: http://screenrant.com/worst-racial-stereotypes-offensive-disney-movies-animation/?view=all . However I think that it's fair to say that improvements are being made with the likes of Moana now being produced. Similarly, Big Hero 6 saw progression with a multicultural cast including an African American and Japanese American.
I think it's important to make people aware of the critical importance of equalising racial representation and the positive impact it can make on groups in society. I would love to look into the development of racial representation in animation/ film (on and behind the screen) through history and any initiatives which are working to better the issue in the same way that Women in Animation UK are.
