La La Land



Watching La La Land for the first time was an absolute joy and I think I'll be watching it for years to come. I feel that is indisputably a good film, every second of it is thought out and intelligently placed, the cinematography is beautiful and as Hazel Hayes argues in the video below, it is a new classic that will continued to be loved. Damien Chazelle, Director, has smoothly referenced films but has been specific in choosing these within a similar time period and genre, finely lacing these references within the narrative to create a beautifully nostalgic piece which evokes the feelings held with the old classics. Similarities can be seen within colours, characters, costumes, tone and camera movements. The camera is often shown to be moving towards the character whilst a spotlight appears on them, reigniting the classic imagery of musicals, and reinforcing that both lead characters have a penchant for the spotlight. Something I found interesting in Hazel's video was her focus on semiotics, which mirrors a lecture we had in COP.
