M.A.F: Day 1

Manchester Animation Festival 2017

A look back at some stand out films from day one.

Green Bird, trailer: https://vimeo.com/236495825, the music is somewhat hypnotizing, the narrative was fresh and hilarious with incredible visuals assisted but great comedic timing. A must watch, and a reminder that animation doesn't have to have the normal narrative arch, a human love story or moral resolution.

Penelope, trailer: https://vimeo.com/200580807. This is not a style I ever work again, but it really showed me how different styles can be used to enforce a narrative, the messy handdrawn style serves to emphasise the chaos in the story, made the crude graphics more light hearted leading to a surprising but enjoyable watch.
A still from 'Liv'

Liv is terminally ill and decides to go back to her roots to live out the rest of her life in the wild,  alongside man's best friend.
It is such an emotional story, the beautiful visuals and landscapes create an ethereal atmosphere. Especially as a graduate film, (Bournemouth Arts) simply stunning.

Twin Islands https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m1zU8rYoKM How is this a student film!? A tale of two twins trying to maintaining perfection in double, the character design and environment design is incredible, a unique story and memorable animation!

The World of Tomorrow Double Bill, trailer: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/worldoftomorrow.
This film is not the style I work in and I think that's maybe why I loved it so much, the simplicity and geometric shapes could still be used in such a mammoth way in the changing times and worlds. I found the first half the most enchanting but the narrative between Emily and her clones was so surreal, funny and original.

MasterClass: The Breadwinner
This was such an amazing, eye opening talk! It's always interesting to hear the ground work that goes into a film because it's so important but often goes unheard of- to know that time and research went into ensuring an understanding of cultural context and sensitivity with the help of Angelina Jolie is very assuring. It was fascinating to see how the accent coach had to assist the actors to ensure their voices all came from the same region was incredible to see and not something I would've considered a big part of it. It's amazing to see animations of culturally diverse nature and being of mixed heritage it is something of great interest to me. In regards to my personal practice and interest in backgrounds, this animation was nothing less than inspiring- the level of quality is something I will always aspire too, the number of iterations, the layouts...
